Auto Racing Design

Dream it.

As a huge racing fan this project was a dream come true for me. Getting the chance to design the paints schemes that would be used on the cars during races was very cool. The main sponsor for Chip Ganassi Racing at the time was Target. As a way to strengthen Polaroids relationship with Target we signed on to a multi-year secondary sponsorship.

Build it.

The NASCAR scheme was really fun and honestly a little easier than the INDY Car scheme as I had more real-estate. With the larger surface area I was able to get a bit more creative with the design. The logo for Polaroid incorporates lots of different colors. I wanted highlight those colors in the design and made a type of “rainbow lightning bolt” for the side. Then on the hood I used the “pixel” as a large background to the Polaroid name. The design was loved by people in racing however it didn’t help get wins on the track.

Grow it.

The INDY Car scheme was a bit tougher with less space to convey the design. One thing in designing both is you are very limited in where you can actually design as every inch of the car is bought for. I obviously wanted the two cars to be recognized as being together but have their own identities. With the INDY Car I took the Polaroid Pixel and deconstructed it and used the little color squares like a confetti on the side of the car.
